Indigent Health Care Program to be Recognized at National Level
7/17/2006
The International City and County Management Association (ICMA) in Washington D.C. awarded Polk County the 2006 Community Health and Safety Program Excellence Award for their Polk HealthCare Plan.
The plan, which was implemented in 1999, was said to be "creative, effective and innovative." The ICMA recognizes local government programs or processes that improve the community's safety, health, and/or wellness – including those that enhance the quality of life for the disadvantaged.
To receive the award and recognition, applications are reviewed by a panel of 17 international ICMA members who judge the program's overall quality. The panel also evaluates the scope of the program and its value to the community -- as well as its capability to be replicated in other communities.
"We're excited about the national recognition and appreciate all of our private and public partners that share in our commitment to serve the local community," said Gwen Hall, of Polk County’s community health and social services division.
As the award recipient, the Polk County Board of County Commissioners will be recognized during ICMA’s 92nd Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas in September. Additionally, the Polk HealthCare Plan will be highlighted in the fall issue of ICMA’s Public Management magazine.
